I converted to Islam on July 28, 2012 after 3 years of in-depth studies. While I always have believed in God or "Higher power" and was raised in a rather religious context by a practicing Catholic mother, I had a number of issues with Catholic teachings of trinity and hierarchy of priests. Issues which I tried to find solutions to by studying various religions. The last but not least of these religions was Islam and Islam answered most of my concerns. Of course that is not to say that all of my concerns were answered and I continue to seek truth in everything. But Islam is my comfort, my pride and joy and I feel closer to God than ever.
Why I wear Hijab [VIDEO]
I was wearing hijab on and off for about 6 months before converting. I started wearing it at the mosque, then on weekends, then slowly with friends and then, on the first day of Ramadan 2012, I began to wear hijab full time at work, with friends, and every time I leave the house. I don't believe hijab is mandatory but it does provide me with a comforting sense of God's presence and God-consciousness.
What Has Been the Reactions to My Conversion [VIDEO]
I am extremely lucky to have had such wonderful friends and family who support me no matter what my choices are. When I converted, I wasn't face with much reluctance and the reluctance I did face, mainly from my parents, came from a place of love and affection. They were concerned that I could be entering a cult-like community which would be detrimental to be as a woman. With time, they have come to the same realizations which I have come to that Muslims may have negative opinions on women but that it does not stem from Islam. Overall, my parents and friends have all accepted my choices and support me fully. :-)
What Ressources Have I Used to Learn About Islam [VIDEO]
I have read three translations of the Qu'ran: English translation by Yusuf Ali and the English translation provided as part of the Qu'ran Android App, and a French translation by D. Mason. The French translation includes a very VERY interesting introduction: a background to Islam and the Qu'ran and well-written notes. Another very interesting background book on the Qu'ran is "The Koran for Dummies" by Sohaib Sultan. The Qu'ran Android App and Qu'ran Explorer both have very grat recitation sof the Qu'ran in Arabic and in English.
